How to Build an Upwork Profile With No Experience (2026)

You can build a strong Upwork profile with no experience on the platform. A new profile cannot show reviews, so it has to show three other things: a narrow service, proof from outside Upwork, and a small first offer that is easy for a client to accept. This guide goes through each section in order.

What clients look for when you have no reviews

A client who considers a new freelancer is taking a risk, and they know it. They accept it when the job is small, the profile is clearly about their kind of job, and something on the page shows you can do it. Your profile has to make that decision easy.

That is also why a new profile should be narrower than an experienced one. "Virtual Assistant" competes with thousands of freelancers who have reviews. "Data Entry for Shopify Product Catalogs" competes with far fewer.

Step 1: choose one small service

Choose a service where the work can be checked quickly and the first job can be small. Good first services include data entry, transcription, product listing, simple design tasks, short video edits, proofreading and bug fixes. See the best Upwork niches for beginners and Upwork job categories with the least competition.

Step 2: write a narrow title

Too broad Narrow
Virtual Assistant | Data Entry | Web Research Data Entry Specialist for Shopify Product Catalogs
Graphic Designer Instagram Post Designer for Small Restaurants
Content Writer Product Description Writer for Online Stores
Video Editor Short-Form Video Editor | Reels and TikTok

The limit is 70 characters. More in 40 Upwork profile title examples.

Step 3: write an honest overview

Use this structure:

  1. What you do and for whom (two lines).
  2. Where your skill comes from: a job, a course, a degree, personal projects.
  3. A small first offer that lowers the client's risk.
  4. How you work: hours, response time, tools.

An example:

I do accurate data entry and spreadsheet cleanup for small online stores. Before Upwork I worked for three years as an inventory clerk, keeping a 9,000-product catalog correct in Excel and Shopify.

I am new on Upwork, so I am taking small fixed-price jobs and delivering them the same day. Send me a sample of your file and I will return the first 20 rows free, so you can check my work before you hire me.

I work 9am to 6pm Dhaka time and reply within one hour.

Notice what it does not do. It does not apologize, it does not say "hard-working and passionate", and it does not claim clients that do not exist. Clean, professional English helps you. Invented experience does not, because clients ask about it. More samples: Upwork profile overview examples.

Step 4: fill your skills

You have 20 slots. Use the skills that appear on the jobs you plan to apply for, including the tools. In the jobs we tracked from September 6 to October 5, 2026, 34% of data entry jobs also asked for Administrative Support and 30% for Microsoft Excel. A beginner who lists only "Data Entry" misses those matches. See which skills to add to your Upwork profile.

Step 5: build a portfolio from samples

An empty portfolio is the most common gap on new profiles, and the easiest to fix. Make two or three pieces that look like the jobs you want: a cleaned spreadsheet, three edited clips, two product descriptions, a redesigned page labelled as concept work. Label samples as samples. See Upwork portfolio tips.

Step 6: add proof from outside Upwork

  • Employment history, with one line on what you did in each role.
  • Education and certifications that relate to the service.
  • Testimonials. Upwork lets you request a testimonial from a client or employer you worked with outside the platform.
  • Identity verification and a clear photo.

Completing these also moves you toward a 100% complete profile, which Upwork requires for the Rising Talent badge. Use the Upwork profile checklist.

Step 7: set a first rate

Set your rate somewhat below the middle of your niche. Not at the bottom. The lowest rates attract the hardest clients, and clients with real budgets often read a very low rate as a warning. Plan to raise it after three to five reviews. See how to price yourself on Upwork.

Step 8: apply early to small, clear jobs

A good profile still needs proposals behind it. Target small fixed-price jobs with a clear scope from clients with verified payment, and apply soon after they are posted, while the client is still reading. Get feedback on your new profile

A new freelancer gets no feedback: no invites, no replies, no reviews to learn from. The free Vibeworker profile audit gives you that feedback on day one.

  • A score out of 100, with separate marks for title, overview, skills and rate.
  • What is missing, such as an empty portfolio, a thin overview or unused skill slots.
  • A stronger title and opening paragraph, written from your own facts and ready to paste.
  • Skills to add, from jobs posted in your niche this week, so you appear in more searches for work you can already do.
  • No login and nothing installed. It reads the public page clients see.

Can I get work on Upwork with no experience?

Yes. You need no Upwork history to be hired, but you do need proof that you can do the work. That proof can come from a past job, studies, sample projects or volunteer work. Clients with small, clear jobs hire new freelancers every day.

What should I write in my Upwork overview as a beginner?

Say what you do and for whom in the first two lines, then give the experience you have from outside Upwork, then make a small, low-risk offer. Do not apologize for being new and do not claim experience you do not have.

What rate should a beginner set on Upwork?

Somewhat below the middle of your niche, not at the bottom. A very low rate attracts difficult clients and makes good ones doubt the quality. Raise it after your first three to five reviews.

Why was my Upwork profile not approved?

Upwork may decline profiles in categories where it already has many freelancers, or profiles that are thin and general. A narrow title, a complete overview, relevant skills and at least one portfolio piece improve your chances when you submit again.
