Upwork Portfolio Tips: What to Add and How to Write Each Piece (2026)
A strong Upwork portfolio has three to six pieces in one niche, each with a title that names the result, a short description of the problem and what changed, and a working link or image. The rule that matters most: show work that looks like the jobs you want to win. A client is looking for their own project, already finished.
What the portfolio is for
Clients open the portfolio after your title and overview have interested them. It answers one question: has this person done my kind of project before? Reviews tell them you are reliable. The portfolio tells them you are relevant.
That is why three matching pieces do more than twelve mixed ones. A Shopify store owner who sees a logo, a mobile app and a WordPress blog learns that you have done many things, and none of them is theirs.
Since Upwork removed specialized profiles in May 2026, one portfolio serves every client, and Upwork may show the most relevant pieces first. Pieces with a clear niche and the right skills attached are easier to match. See what to do now that specialized profiles are gone.
A template for each portfolio piece
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Title | The service and the result. "Shopify speed rebuild: 4.1s to 1.6s load time" |
| Your role | What you did yourself, in one line |
| Description | Problem, what you did, what changed. Three to five sentences |
| Skills | The same skill names you use on your profile |
A description you can adapt:
Problem: a skincare store was loading in 4.1 seconds on mobile and losing buyers at checkout.
What I did: rebuilt the product page and cart, removed six unused apps, compressed images and deferred scripts.
Result: load time 1.6 seconds, mobile conversion from 1.2% to 2.9% in six weeks.
Problem, action and result is enough. Do not describe the tools at length. The client cares what changed.
Examples by niche
| Niche | A strong portfolio piece |
|---|---|
| Web development | A live site link, before and after speed scores, one screenshot |
| Graphic design | The final identity on real items (packaging, signage), plus the brief in two lines |
| Content writing | A published article with its link and what it ranks for or how much traffic it brought |
| Video editing | A 30-second cut, with the raw length and turnaround time in the description |
| Virtual assistance | A screenshot of a system you set up (inbox rules, a Notion board), with client details removed |
| Lead generation | A sample of 20 rows from a list, with private data masked, plus the bounce rate |
| Data entry | Before and after views of a cleaned spreadsheet |
Admin and support freelancers often leave the portfolio empty because the work is not visual. It does not need to be. A masked screenshot of a tidy system is proof.
What to show if you have no clients yet
- Sample projects. Make the thing a client in your niche would order. A video editor can cut three Reels from free stock footage. A writer can publish two articles on a personal blog.
- Concept work. Redesign or rewrite a real public page, and label it clearly as a concept, not client work.
- Work from a job. With your employer's permission, and without private data.
- Volunteer work. A local charity's website counts.
Never present work that is not yours, and never label a sample as a paid client project. Clients ask about portfolio pieces in interviews. More in how to build an Upwork profile with no experience.
Common portfolio mistakes
- Dead links. Client sites change and get taken down. A broken link at the top of your portfolio looks like an abandoned profile. Check every link each month, and keep screenshots so a piece survives if the site does not.
- Pictures with no words. An image without a problem and a result is decoration.
- Old work first. Put the most recent and most relevant pieces at the top.
- Mixed niches. Remove the pieces that do not support your title.
- Skills that do not match your profile. Use the same skill names in both places. See which skills to add.
Use your portfolio in proposals
A portfolio also works outside the profile. When you apply, name one piece in the first lines of your cover letter and say why it is close to the client's job. That is more convincing than attaching five files. See how to write an Upwork proposal that gets a response.
Check your portfolio and the rest of your profile
The free Vibeworker profile audit reads your public Upwork profile, portfolio included, and reports back in under a minute.
- Every link checked, with the dead ones listed.
- A missing or thin portfolio flagged, along with empty skill slots and thin sections.
- A score out of 100, with separate marks for title, overview, skills and rate.
- A stronger title and opening paragraph, written from your own facts and ready to paste.
- Skills to add, from jobs posted in your niche this week.
- No login and nothing installed. It reads the public page clients see.

How many portfolio items should I have on Upwork?
Three to six strong pieces in one niche are enough. A client looks at the first two or three, so put the pieces closest to the jobs you want at the top.
What can I put in my Upwork portfolio with no clients?
Sample projects you made for practice, work from a past job (with permission), volunteer work, and redesigns or rewrites of real public websites, clearly labelled as concept work. A good sample that matches the client's project is better than no portfolio.
How do I add a portfolio on Upwork?
Open your profile, find the Portfolio section and choose to add a project. Give it a title, your role, a description, the skills used and the files, images or links. You can save a draft and publish it when it is ready.
Can I show client work in my portfolio?
Only with the client's permission, and never anything covered by a confidentiality agreement. If you cannot show the work, describe the problem and the result without naming the client.
How do I know if my portfolio links still work?
Click each one, or run the free Upwork profile audit, which checks every link on your profile and reports the dead ones.
