Which Skills to Add to Your Upwork Profile (2026 Data)

You can add up to 20 skills to your Upwork profile, and you should use all 20, chosen from one niche. The best skills to add are the ones that appear next to your main skill in real job posts, because that is what Upwork matches you against. This guide shows how to find them, using 26,799 jobs we tracked between September 6 and October 5, 2026.

Why skills matter more than they look

Skills are the most structured part of your profile. Clients pick skill tags when they post a job, and Upwork compares those tags with yours when it decides who appears in search and who gets recommended for an invite. Your overview can be read in many ways. A skill tag either matches or it does not.

Two numbers from our data explain how to use them:

  • The median job lists 4 skills (the average is 5.6).
  • Those skills sit close together. A job is rarely "Shopify" alone. It is Shopify plus the two or three things that client needs done in Shopify.

So a profile with one broad skill matches part of many jobs, and a profile with the full group of related skills matches all of a job.

A video editor who lists "Video Editing" but not "Video Post-Editing" is missing a tag that more than a third of their jobs carry. That is a two-minute fix.

How to choose your 20 skills

  1. Start with your title. The first three skills should repeat the service in your title.
  2. Add the neighbors. Open ten jobs you would like to win and write down every skill tag. Add the ones that appear on three or more.
  3. Add the tools. Clients often tag the software (Premiere Pro, Klaviyo, QuickBooks) and not the task.
  4. Add the deliverables. "Shopify Theme" and "Landing Page" are searched as often as "Shopify" and "Web Design".
  5. Remove the strays. A skill from another field weakens the rest. A Shopify developer does not need "Translation" on the list.
  6. Order them. Main skills first.

If you have few skills listed

A profile with five or fewer skills has room to grow. Fill the empty slots with the high-demand skills next to your main one, so you appear in more searches for work you can already do.

If your list is already full

Then the work is sharpening. Find the two or three skills that do not fit your niche, and replace them with the specific ones clients in your niche are asking for this month. Check again every few weeks, because demand moves.

Only add skills you can deliver. A skill tag is a promise, and a client who hires on it will find out.

Find the skills missing from your profile

The tables above cover five niches. The free Vibeworker profile audit does the same analysis for yours.

  • Skills to add, from jobs posted in your niche this week, with the number of jobs asking for each.
  • How many of your 20 slots are in use, and which skills do not fit the rest.
  • A skills score, next to scores for your title, overview and rate.
  • A stronger title and opening paragraph, ready to paste.
  • No login and nothing installed. It reads the public page clients see.

How many skills can I add to my Upwork profile?
  1. Upwork raised the limit from 15 in spring 2026, around the time it removed specialized profiles.
Should I use all 20 skill slots?

Yes, as long as every skill belongs to the same kind of work. Each empty slot is a client search you cannot appear in. Skills from a different field make your profile look unfocused, so leave those out.

Does the order of skills matter?

Put your main skills first. Clients see only the first few in search results, and those should match your title.

Which skills are most in demand on Upwork?

In the 26,799 jobs we tracked from September 6 to October 5, 2026, the most requested skills were Graphic Design, Video Editing, Social Media Marketing, Lead Generation and Web Design. Demand in your own niche matters more than the overall list.

How do I find which skills clients in my niche want?
