Upwork Profile Checklist: 25 Things to Check Before You Apply (2026)

Use this checklist before you send your next proposal. It has 25 checks in six groups. If you only have ten minutes, do the first three groups: title, overview and skills decide whether a client opens your profile at all.

Title (checks 1 to 3)

  • 1. It names one service a client would type into search.
  • 2. It adds a client type or a result, not a list of tools.
  • 3. It is under 70 characters, with the service in the first 40.

Examples: 40 Upwork profile title examples.

Overview (checks 4 to 9)

  • 4. The first two lines say who you help and what you deliver. About 250 characters show before "more".
  • 5. There is a number or a named result in those two lines.
  • 6. No greeting and no "my name is" at the start.
  • 7. No stock phrases. Search your overview for "passionate", "results-driven", "next level" and "bring your vision to life". Replace each with a fact.
  • 8. It is at least 500 characters. Shorter than that reads as unfinished.
  • 9. It ends with a next step: what the client should send you.

Examples: 8 Upwork profile overview examples.

Skills (checks 10 to 13)

  • 10. All 20 slots are used. The limit went from 15 to 20 in spring 2026.
  • 11. Every skill belongs to the same niche.
  • 12. The first three skills match your title.
  • 13. Tools and deliverables are included, not only the name of the service.

Method and data: which skills to add to your Upwork profile.

Portfolio and proof (checks 14 to 19)

  • 14. At least three portfolio pieces, each like a job you want to win.
  • 15. Each piece states a problem and a result, not only a picture.
  • 16. Every link works. Click each one today.
  • 17. Employment history is filled in, with one line on what you did in each role.
  • 18. Certifications and education are listed where they are relevant to the niche.
  • 19. You have asked for a testimonial from at least one past client outside Upwork, if you have few reviews.

Rate and photo (checks 20 to 22)

  • 20. An hourly rate is set, close to what clients in your niche pay for your level of proof. See how to price yourself on Upwork.
  • 21. Your photo shows your face clearly, on a plain background, cropped close.
  • 22. Your name is written the same way as on your ID and payment method.

Settings (checks 23 to 25)

  • 23. Profile visibility is set to public, so clients and search engines can find it.
  • 24. Availability and weekly hours are correct.
  • 25. Identity is verified and a short video introduction is added, if you are comfortable on camera.

What a 100% complete profile needs

Upwork shows a completeness percentage on your profile and tells you what is missing. In general it counts your photo, title, overview, skills, employment history and education, plus proof sections such as portfolio, certifications, other experience and a video introduction. Upwork requires 100% before you can be considered for the Rising Talent badge.

Reaching 100% is a minimum, not a goal. Two profiles can both be complete, and one can still have a vague title and a generic overview. Do the 25 checks above and you will pass completeness along the way.

After the checklist

A ready profile only helps if clients see it on the right jobs, early. Read why being first on Upwork matters, and for the reasoning behind each check see Upwork profile optimization. New to the platform? Start with how to build an Upwork profile with no experience.

Run the checklist automatically

Most of this checklist can be checked by software. The free Vibeworker profile audit reads your public Upwork profile and reports back in under a minute.

  • A score out of 100, with separate marks for title, overview, skills and rate.
  • Empty skill slots, thin sections and dead links, found for you.
  • Stock phrases highlighted in your overview, line by line.
  • A stronger title and opening paragraph, written from your own facts and ready to paste.
  • Skills to add, from jobs posted in your niche this week.
  • No login and nothing installed. It reads the public page clients see.

How do I get a 100% complete Upwork profile?

Fill in every section Upwork asks for: photo, title, overview, skills, employment history, education, and at least one of the optional proof sections such as portfolio, certifications or a video introduction. Upwork shows your completeness percentage and the missing items on your profile page.

Do I need a 100% complete profile?

You need it to be eligible for the Rising Talent badge, and a complete profile gives clients fewer reasons to doubt you. It does not win work by itself. The quality of your title, overview and skills matters more.

How often should I review my Upwork profile?

Every four to six weeks, and after every strong project. Client demand shifts, and your best proof should always be your most recent.

Is there a tool that checks my Upwork profile?

Yes. The free Upwork profile audit reads your public profile, scores it out of 100 and lists the fixes in priority order, including dead links and empty skill slots.
