Is Upwork Getting Harder for Beginners? (2026 Data)

Not on the demand side. Between May and September 2026, the share of Upwork job posts asking for entry-level freelancers went up, from 8.0% to 10.3%. That is about 400 entry-level jobs a day. Pay on those jobs did not move: the median fixed budget was $40 in both months. What we cannot see is how many freelancers apply to each job, and that is the half of "harder" that job posts do not answer.

The numbers come from jobs we tracked in May, June, September and the first week of October 2026. We compare shares, not raw counts, because the way jobs are collected changed during the summer.

Entry-level jobs as a share of all postings

Month (2026) Entry level Intermediate Expert
May 8.0% 67.5% 24.5%
June 8.3% 67.4% 24.4%
September 10.3% 62.0% 27.7%
October 1 to 8 10.4% 61.0% 28.6%

The middle shrank. Clients moved toward both ends: more asked for Expert, and more asked for Entry level. For a beginner, that is a slightly larger slice of the market than in spring.

What entry-level jobs look like

September 2026, 11,982 entry-level posts:

Entry level All jobs
Median fixed-price budget $40 $100
Fixed-price jobs under $50 51% 31.5%
Share that are fixed price 58% 40%
Typical hourly range posted $10 to $20 $10 to $25 (Intermediate)
Client payment verified 81% 77%
Job asks for a minimum Job Success Score 1.0% 2.6%

Three things stand out.

  • The jobs are small. Half the fixed-price entry-level jobs pay under $50. That is the trade: low pay, in exchange for a first review.
  • The clients are no worse. Entry-level jobs came from payment-verified clients slightly more often than the average job.
  • Few of them lock you out. Only 1 in 100 entry-level jobs set a minimum Job Success Score, which a new profile cannot have.

Where the beginner jobs are

Share of each category's September postings that asked for entry-level freelancers:

Category Entry-level share In May
Data Entry & Transcription 43.6% 35.1%
Performing Arts* 43.1% 35.9%
Market Research & Product Reviews 38.0% 31.5%
QA Testing 36.9% n/a (category renamed)
Translation & Localization 32.5% 23.0%
Virtual Assistance 19.9% 17.0%
Customer Service & Tech Support 18.4% 22.2%
Content Writing 12.2% 13.5%

*Performing Arts is inflated by recruiting posts for AI training data, such as short voice and phone recordings. These are real paid tasks, but they are not acting or music work.

And where they are not:

Category Entry-level share
Web Development 5.0%
Ecommerce Development 5.2%
Branding & Logo Design 5.4%
Web & Mobile Design 5.6%
Product Design 4.3%
Corporate & Contract Law 4.2%

If you are new and in a technical or design field, about 1 job in 20 is labeled for you. That does not mean you cannot win Intermediate jobs with a strong portfolio. It means you will be applying next to freelancers who already have reviews. See best Upwork niches for beginners.

What the data does not show

Job posts tell us what clients ask for. They do not tell us how many freelancers answer. If more new freelancers joined Upwork this year than new entry-level jobs appeared, it would feel harder even with demand rising, and that is a common report from beginners.

So the honest summary is this: demand for beginners is steady to slightly up, pay for beginners is flat and low, and competition is the unknown. The parts you control are which jobs you pick and how early you apply.

What to do with this

  1. Start where entry-level demand is high. A category where a third of the jobs are open to beginners gives you far more chances than one where it is 5%.
  2. Take small, clearly scoped jobs first. A $40 job that ends in a five-star review is worth more than the $40. See how to get your first 5-star review.
  3. Check the client. Payment verified, and a hire rate if they have one. See why hire rate matters more than budget.
  4. Apply early. A new profile near the top of a short list gets read. The same profile at number 40 often does not. See why being first matters.
  5. Fix the profile before you spend Connects. The free Upwork profile audit grades it in about 10 seconds.
