Why Am I Not Getting Jobs on Upwork? 7 Reasons, With Data
Usually it is the jobs you are applying to, not you. In September 2026, 35% of the Upwork jobs we tracked came from clients with no hiring history, and another 19% from clients who hire on fewer than half of what they post. Add jobs that ask for a different experience level, a location you are not in, or a Job Success Score you do not have yet, and a large share of proposals were never going to win. The rest comes down to timing, the first two lines of the proposal, and the profile behind it.
Here are seven reasons, in the order worth checking, with numbers from the 116,224 job posts we tracked between September 1 and September 30, 2026.
1. The client was never going to hire
| Client's hire rate | Share of September jobs |
|---|---|
| 75% or more | 34% |
| 50% to 74% | 12% |
| 1% to 49% | 13% |
| 0% | 6% |
| No hiring history shown | 35% |
Only 46% of jobs came from clients who are known to hire on at least half of their posts. A client with no history is not always a bad bet, since every good client was new once. But if most of your proposals go to that 35%, a low reply rate is expected.
Fix: look at hire rate and total spend before you apply. See why hire rate matters more than budget.
2. You are applying at the wrong level
| Experience level asked for | Share of jobs |
|---|---|
| Entry level | 10.3% |
| Intermediate | 62.0% |
| Expert | 27.7% |
A new profile applying to Expert jobs is competing with freelancers who have years of reviews. An experienced freelancer applying to Entry level jobs is usually over the budget: the median fixed price on those is $40.
Fix: filter to the level your profile supports today. If you are new, see Is Upwork getting harder for beginners?
3. The job quietly excluded you
Some jobs set requirements that decide the outcome before the client reads a word.
- Screening questions: 19% of jobs, and 27% of fixed-price jobs at $1,000 or more. Skipped or one-word answers are an easy reason to pass on you. See the most common Upwork screening questions.
- A minimum Job Success Score: 2.6% of jobs, most of them asking for 90% or higher. Among Expert jobs it is 3.7%.
- A preferred location: at least 13% of jobs. The real share is higher, because jobs restricted to the United States or United Kingdom are hidden from freelancers elsewhere. For other countries the setting is a preference: you can apply, but you start behind.
Fix: read the requirements block first. Answer every screening question in full. If the job names a location that is not yours, spend the Connects elsewhere.
4. You applied too late
We tracked about 3,900 new jobs a day in September: around 4,400 on a weekday and 2,500 on a weekend day, peaking between 15:00 and 18:00 UTC. Clients often start reading as proposals arrive and shortlist from the first batch. A proposal sent hours later has to be better than everything already read.
Fix: apply in the first minutes when you can. See why being first matters and the best time of day to apply.
5. The job post itself was vague
About a quarter of September jobs (24.6%) scored low on scope clarity in our scoring: no clear deliverable, no real description, or a title and nothing else. A client who has not decided what they want is hard to win, however good the proposal.
Fix: prefer jobs where you can say in one sentence what will be delivered. See jobs not worth bidding on.
6. Your first two lines read like everyone else's
The client sees the first two lines of each proposal in a list. If yours starts with your name and years of experience, it looks like the others. Start with their problem and one specific thing you noticed in the post.
Fix: see how to write an Upwork proposal that gets a response and why your proposals are getting ignored.
7. Your profile does not match the jobs you apply to
A client who likes the proposal opens the profile next. A general headline, no portfolio piece close to their job, or skills that point somewhere else will end it there.
Fix: the free Upwork profile audit grades your profile in about 10 seconds and shows what to change first. See also Upwork profile optimization.
Check these in order
| If this is true | The likely cause | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Few of your proposals are viewed | Job choice or timing | Reasons 1 to 5 |
| Viewed, but no replies | Proposal or profile | Reasons 6 and 7 |
| Replies, but no hires | Price, or the interview | Your rate and your follow-up |
Reasons 1 to 5 are about which jobs you choose and when you apply. They cost nothing to fix and they come first, because a strong proposal sent late to a client who never hires still loses.
Check your profile first, free
Reasons 1 to 5 are about the jobs. Reason 7 is the one part that is about you, and it is the quickest to check. Paste your profile link into the free Upwork profile audit. In about 10 seconds you get a score against this week's real job demand, a rewritten title and overview, skills to add, and the fixes in order.

How long does it take to get your first job on Upwork?
It varies widely, and Upwork does not publish a figure. What shortens it most is applying to entry-level jobs from clients with a hiring history, early, with a profile that matches the job.
Why do I get no response to my Upwork proposals?
Often because of the job, not the proposal. In September 2026, 35% of the jobs we tracked came from clients with no hiring history, and 19% from clients who hire on fewer than half of their posts. Late proposals and generic openings account for most of the rest.
How many proposals should I send on Upwork before I get hired?
There is no fixed number. Track your own: proposals sent, viewed, replied to and hired. If few are viewed, the problem is timing or job choice. If they are viewed with no reply, the problem is the proposal or the profile. The free proposal tracker does the math.
Does Upwork hide jobs from some freelancers?
Yes. Jobs restricted to freelancers in the United States or the United Kingdom are not shown to freelancers elsewhere. Other location settings are preferences: you can see and apply to the job, but the client asked for someone else.
