The Upwork Job Market in September 2026: 116,224 Postings, Analyzed

Vibeworker observed 116,224 deduplicated public Upwork job postings in September 2026. That is about 3,900 new jobs a day, or one every 22.3 seconds: about 4,400 on an average weekday and 2,500 on an average weekend day.

This report describes what those postings looked like: how they paid, what experience level clients asked for, which AI tools they named, when they were posted and which categories carried the volume. It measures postings, not outcomes: not proposals sent, contracts awarded or final negotiated pay.

The short version

  • Median fixed-price budget: $100. Median effective hourly rate on fixed-price work: $10.
  • 31.5% of fixed-price jobs budgeted under $50. 22.4% budgeted $500 or more.
  • 60% of postings were hourly and 40% fixed-price.
  • 10.3% of postings asked for Entry level talent. Intermediate was 62.0%, Expert 27.7%.
  • 23.0% came from clients without a verified payment method.
  • AI agent and n8n gained the most title mentions from August. Claude was still the most-named AI tool.
  • Postings peaked between 15:00 and 18:00 UTC (11 a.m. to 2 p.m. US Eastern).

Fixed-price budgets: most are small, but a fifth pay $500 or more

Of September's postings, 46,338 were fixed-price with a listed budget and 69,886 were hourly. Among the fixed-price jobs, the median budget was $100.

Distribution of fixed-price Upwork job budgets in September 2026

Budget band Jobs Share
Under $50 14,589 31.5%
$50–$100 6,246 13.5%
$100–$250 9,620 20.8%
$250–$500 5,517 11.9%
$500–$1,000 4,503 9.7%
$1,000+ 5,863 12.7%

Almost a third of fixed-price postings budgeted under $50, and 45% were under $100. At the other end, 22.4% budgeted $500 or more, which is about 10,400 jobs in the month, or roughly 345 a day.

Dividing each fixed-price budget by Vibeworker's estimate of the hours the job would take gives an effective hourly rate. The median fixed-price job in September worked out to about $10 an hour. That is a listed-budget figure, not completed-contract pay, and budgets are often negotiable, but it is what clients put in front of applicants.

Clients asked for experience far more than for beginners

Across September postings with an experience level set:

Experience level Jobs Share
Intermediate 72,005 62.0%
Expert 32,154 27.7%
Entry level 11,982 10.3%

About one posting in ten was labeled Entry level. Close to nine in ten asked for Intermediate or Expert talent. For a new freelancer, that means most of the feed is written for someone with a track record. The Entry level tenth, and well-scoped small jobs in the Intermediate tier, are where first reviews usually come from. We looked at this gap in more depth in the entry-level delusion, visualized.

AI agents and n8n gained; Gemini and Make.com fell

Vibeworker tracks how often specific AI and automation tools appear in job titles, normalized per 100,000 postings so the comparison is not distorted by how many postings were observed each month.

Change in AI and automation tool mentions in Upwork job titles, August to September 2026

Tool August per 100k September per 100k Change
AI agent 271.5 304.6 +12.2%
n8n 253.5 278.8 +10.0%
Copilot 36.0 37.0 +2.8%
Lovable 76.5 75.7 −1.0%
Claude 340.4 333.0 −2.2%
ChatGPT 76.5 71.4 −6.7%
Zapier 90.7 74.0 −18.4%
OpenAI 75.0 57.6 −23.2%
Make.com 63.7 45.6 −28.4%
Gemini 32.2 18.9 −41.3%

"AI agent" gained the most, up 12.2%, and n8n followed at +10.0%. Clients increasingly describe the job as building an agent or a workflow rather than naming a model. Claude held roughly steady and was still the most-named AI tool in Upwork titles by a wide margin (387 mentions, 333 per 100,000). Among automation platforms, n8n pulled further ahead of Zapier and Make.com, which both fell.

The table only includes terms with at least 40 title mentions in one of the two months, so a term going from 10 mentions to 15 is not shown as 50% growth.

When jobs are posted

Postings follow the US working day. In September, the four busiest hours were 15:00 to 18:00 UTC, each carrying about 5.7% of the day's postings. That is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. US Eastern. The quietest hours were 04:00 and 05:00 UTC, at about 2.8% each.

Weekdays averaged about 4,400 postings and weekend days about 2,500, so a Saturday has a little over half the jobs of a Tuesday. Because jobs arrive all day, the best time of day to apply is less about one hour and more about being early on each job.

Video & Animation and Digital Marketing led September

Top Upwork categories by postings in September 2026

Category Jobs Share
Video & Animation 14,613 12.6%
Digital Marketing 14,194 12.2%
Graphic, Editorial & Presentation Design 8,632 7.4%
Lead Generation & Telemarketing 7,931 6.8%
Web Development 6,803 5.9%
Virtual Assistance 6,103 5.3%
Web & Mobile Design 4,980 4.3%

Video & Animation and Digital Marketing together made up about a quarter of all postings. Creative and marketing work carried the largest share of the feed, with web development and virtual assistance close behind. Client signals

Payment verification is one of the cheapest quality checks to make before spending Connects. In September, 23.0% of postings came from clients whose payment method was not verified. What the verified payment badge actually tells you covers why that matters and what it does not guarantee. Separately, 4.2% of scored postings tripped Vibeworker's red-flag screen (a score of 3 or below out of 10).

What the month says

September's feed was mostly small jobs, with a real upper tier: about 345 fixed-price jobs a day at $500 or more, and a steady flow of hourly work. Clients kept asking for experience far more often than for beginners. In AI work, the language moved from model names to what gets built: agents and n8n workflows. For a freelancer, the practical point is the same every month: the jobs worth a proposal are a minority of the feed, so filtering quickly and applying early matter more than reading everything.

Methodology

Vibeworker analyzed 116,224 deduplicated public Upwork job postings observed from September 1 through September 30, 2026 UTC. Deduplication keeps one record per job.

Budget statistics use fixed-price postings with a usable positive listed budget. The effective hourly rate divides a posting's listed fixed budget by an LLM estimate of the hours the job would require, and is a listed-value figure rather than completed-contract pay. Experience-level shares use postings with a level set. AI-tool rates use literal case-insensitive title matches, are normalized per 100,000 postings, and are not mutually exclusive. Red-flag rates use Vibeworker's per-job scoring. Posting times use each job's posting timestamp in UTC.

Counts describe the postings Vibeworker observed and are not a census of all Upwork jobs, so compare months by shares and rates rather than raw totals. Category labels follow the categories attached to each posting. The dataset does not measure proposals, contracts awarded, final negotiated pay or freelancer earnings.
