The Upwork Niche Map: 26,544 Jobs Sorted Into 100 Niches
The biggest niche on Upwork is video editing, and the best-paying niches are small ones most freelancers never search for. We took the 26,544 public Upwork jobs we tracked between October 1 and October 8, 2026 and sorted them into 100 niches by what the work actually is. Video editing came out at 7.1% of all jobs with a median fixed budget near $60. Information security, at 0.4% of jobs, had a median of $625.
Upwork's own categories are broad. "Web Development" holds a $75 WordPress fix and a $500 full-stack build. So we ignored the categories and let the jobs group themselves. Each job has a numeric fingerprint built from its title and required skills. Jobs with similar fingerprints landed in the same group, and we named each group by hand from its most common skills and titles. The method is at the end.
The biggest niches
Some groups were plainly the same niche split in two, so they are combined here.
| Niche | Jobs in the week | Share of all jobs | Median fixed budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video editing (short and long form) | 1,881 | 7.1% | $60 to $73 |
| Cold calling, telesales and appointment setting | 1,089 | 4.1% | $200 to $250 |
| Social media management | 1,082 | 4.1% | $100 to $120 |
| Virtual assistants and admin support | 819 | 3.1% | $200 |
| WordPress (site builds and WooCommerce) | 591 | 2.2% | $75 to $100 |
| AI video generation and AI UGC ads | 544 | 2.0% | $60 |
| Legal advice and contracts | 461 | 1.7% | $250 |
| Shopify development | 451 | 1.7% | $135 |
| Small business websites and landing pages | 442 | 1.7% | $180 |
| Logo and brand identity | 436 | 1.6% | $150 |
| Bookkeeping (QuickBooks) | 414 | 1.6% | $100 |
No niche is large. The biggest single group was 4.1% of jobs and the typical one was under 1%. Upwork is a hundred small markets, which is why a general profile struggles: it is slightly relevant to many of them and the best fit for none.
The best-paying niches
Ranked by median fixed-price budget, for niches with at least 15 fixed-price jobs in the week.
| Niche | Median fixed budget | Typical hourly range | Share of all jobs | Jobs asking for an Expert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Information security and compliance | $625 | $27.50 to $50 | 0.4% | 53% |
| Full-stack development (React, Node) | $500 | $25 to $47 | 1.5% | 57% |
| On-site videography | $500 | $31 to $75 | 1.0% | 17% |
| Marketing strategy and fractional CMO | $475 | $17.50 to $42 | 0.7% | 49% |
| Zoho, Dynamics and Power Platform | $400 | $20 to $40 | 0.7% | 43% |
| Electrical engineering | $363 | $15 to $40 | 0.3% | 37% |
| B2B sales and business development | $356 | $15 to $30 | 1.5% | 36% |
| PCB design and embedded systems | $350 | $20 to $45 | 0.5% | 40% |
| PR and content strategy | $325 | $15 to $40 | 0.9% | 42% |
| Python AI and machine learning | $300 | $20 to $50 | 0.9% | 52% |
| Google Ads and PPC | $300 | $13 to $35 | 1.3% | 46% |
| Structural and civil engineering | $300 | $15 to $35 | 0.5% | 34% |
And by the top of the hourly range clients posted:
| Niche | Typical hourly range |
|---|---|
| Legal advice and contracts | $30 to $100 |
| On-site videography | $31 to $75 |
| Financial modeling and fractional CFO | $20 to $70 |
| Tax preparation and CPA work | $21 to $65 |
| Voice-over | $20 to $60 |
Two patterns explain most of this list.
- Work that needs a license or carries liability pays best per hour. Law, tax, structural engineering and security audits. A client cannot hand these to a chatbot or to the cheapest bidder.
- Work that has to happen in a place pays well. On-site videography and product photography cannot be done from another country, so the pool of freelancers is small.
Neither is where the crowd is. The twelve best-paying niches together were about 10% of jobs.
The lowest-paying niches
| Niche | Median fixed budget |
|---|---|
| Data annotation and transcription | $20 |
| eBay and Etsy listings | $25 |
| QA and app testing | $30 |
| Data entry | $40 |
| Translation and subtitles | $50 |
| Canva design and templates | $50 |
| Photo editing and retouching | $50 |
| Wix and Squarespace sites | $50 |
These are tasks, not projects. Many are a fair way to earn a first review. Few are a place to stay.
Where beginners are wanted
Share of each niche's jobs that asked for entry-level freelancers:
| Niche | Entry-level share | Median fixed budget |
|---|---|---|
| Voice recording for AI training data | 64% | $100 |
| Phone research and mystery shopping | 48% | $70 |
| Data annotation and transcription | 39% | $20 |
| Market and company research | 38% | $80 |
| QA and app testing | 37% | $30 |
| UGC video creators | 37% | $80 |
| Product photography | 36% | $132 |
| Data entry | 35% | $40 |
| Virtual assistants (general) | 25% | $200 |
At the other end, fewer than 3% of jobs in PCB design, analytics tracking, security, electrical engineering, construction estimating and Meta ads management were open to beginners. See Is Upwork getting harder for beginners?
The AI niches
AI did not form one niche. It formed several, and they pay very differently.
| Niche | Jobs | Median fixed budget | Typical hourly range | Expert |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI video generation and AI UGC ads | 544 | $60 | $10 to $27 | 30% |
| AI agents and chatbots | 338 | $150 | $20 to $40 | 47% |
| Workflow automation (n8n, Make, APIs) | 254 | $100 | $15 to $35 | 34% |
| GoHighLevel and CRM automation | 253 | $23 | $15 to $38 | 36% |
| Python AI and machine learning | 227 | $300 | $20 to $50 | 52% |
| AI voice agents and business automation | 216 | $150 | $15 to $30 | 37% |
The four building niches (agents, automation, voice agents and Python AI) add up to 3.9% of all jobs. AI video is the largest single AI niche and the cheapest. See Do AI skills pay more on Upwork?
How to use the map
- Find your niche in the full table below, not your category. Your competition and your pay are set by the niche.
- Look one row over. A WordPress developer sits next to Shopify development ($135) and SaaS development ($200). A video editor sits next to motion graphics ($150) and on-site videography ($500). The closest better-paid niche is usually a small step.
- Name the niche in your profile title. Clients search and skim for the exact thing. The free Upwork profile audit checks your title and skills against current job demand.
- Small niches need alerts. A niche with 130 jobs a week is about 19 a day across every time zone. You will not catch them by checking twice a day.
All 100 niches
Sorted by number of jobs, October 1 to 8, 2026. "Expert" and "Entry level" are the share of the niche's jobs asking for that level. A blank cell means too few jobs of that type to give a median.

How the map was made
- Jobs: 26,544 public Upwork job posts we tracked from October 1 to October 8, 2026.
- Fingerprints: every job Vibeworker tracks gets an embedding of its title, required skills and category. This is the same data used to match jobs to freelancers.
- Grouping: k-means clustering into 100 groups. We chose 100 because it kept recognizable niches apart without splitting them into fragments. A different number would move some borders.
- Names: written by hand from each group's most common skills and titles. One group ("Mixed illustration and design") had no clear theme and is labeled that way.
- Pay: medians of what clients listed. Fixed-price medians are shown only where a niche had at least 15 fixed-price jobs. Hourly ranges are the median low and high end of posted ranges.
- Limits: one week of posts, so small niches can move a lot from week to week. The map counts job posts, not hires or final pay.
