Do AI Skills Pay More on Upwork? (2026 Data)

A little, and only at the top. In September 2026 the median fixed-price budget on Upwork jobs with AI in the title was $100, the same as every other job. AI jobs were more likely to be large (17.4% at $1,000 or more, against 12.3%) and their hourly ranges were a few dollars higher. But most of that gap comes from AI jobs asking for experts more often. Compare expert jobs with expert jobs and the premium is gone. In video and writing, AI jobs paid less.

The numbers come from the 116,224 jobs we tracked between September 1 and September 30, 2026. An "AI job" here is one whose title names AI or an AI tool: AI, AI agent, ChatGPT, GPT, Claude, OpenAI, LLM, n8n, machine learning, RAG, generative or LangChain. That was 8,445 jobs, 7.3% of postings.

AI jobs against everything else

September 2026 AI in the title All other jobs
Jobs tracked 8,445 107,779
Median fixed-price budget $100 $100
Fixed-price jobs at $1,000 or more 17.4% 12.3%
Fixed-price jobs under $50 30.6% 31.6%
Typical hourly range posted $15 to $30 $12 to $27
Jobs asking for an Expert 38.9% 26.8%
Jobs asking for Entry level 7.5% 10.5%
Client payment verified 80.1% 76.4%

Two things are true at once. The middle of the AI market looks like the middle of every market: a $100 job. And the top is thicker: about one AI job in six is $1,000 or more.

The premium is mostly an expert premium

AI jobs ask for an Expert 39% of the time, against 27% for other jobs. Expert jobs pay more whatever the subject. So compare like with like:

Expert-level jobs, September 2026 AI in the title All other jobs
Median fixed-price budget $200 $200
Median top hourly rate posted $40 $40

No difference. An expert in AI and an expert in anything else see the same typical budget. What AI gives you is more expert-level jobs to apply to, not a higher price on each one.

It depends on which AI work

Median fixed-price budget inside each category, September 2026:

Category AI in the title Other jobs in the category
Web Development $250 $200
Mobile Development $250 $200
Digital Marketing $120 $100
Graphic Design $60 $60
Video & Animation $50 $100
Content Writing* $60 $100
Scripts & Utilities $50 $150

*Fewer than 100 AI-titled jobs, so treat this row as a rough guide.

Where AI means building something (an app with an AI feature, an agent, an integration), the job pays more than its neighbors. Where AI means producing content faster (AI video clips, AI-assisted articles, small scripts), the job pays less. Video is the clearest case: 965 AI-titled video jobs with a median of $50, half the category's $100.

That matches what clients are buying. In the first case they pay for a skill they do not have. In the second they expect the tool to have made the work cheap.

What to do with this

  1. Sell the build, not the tool. "I build AI agents that qualify your leads" sits in the group that pays more. "I make AI videos" sits in the group that pays less.
  2. Aim at the top end. One AI job in six is $1,000 or more. Set a budget floor and ignore the rest.
  3. Get to Expert positioning. The pay gap is an experience gap. A profile and portfolio that support expert-level jobs matter more than adding another AI keyword. The free Upwork profile audit shows what yours is missing.
  4. Apply early. Good AI jobs draw applicants quickly. See why being first matters.
