In the 30 days to 5 October 2026 we tracked 415 jobs in Upwork's AI categories, about 14 a day, plus AI and LLM work inside 597 other software jobs. The beginner door is data annotation and labeling, where 35% of jobs were entry level. The better-paid work (agents, chatbots, automation, machine learning) almost never accepts beginners. The realistic path is to start with annotation or no-code automation and build toward the work that pays.

Across the AI categories as a whole, hourly jobs posted a median range of $19 to $40 an hour, one of the highest of any category, and 37% asked for expert level.

The beginner path

Step 1: Data annotation and labeling

Labeling images, rating AI answers, tagging text and audio. It needs care and consistency, not a degree. Fixed-price annotation jobs are small (a median of $5), so look for hourly and ongoing projects. Treat it as a way to earn reviews and learn how AI training data works.

Step 2: No-code automation

Connecting tools with n8n, Zapier or Make, often with an AI step in the middle: summarize this email, classify this lead, draft a reply. Step 3: Chatbots and agents

Customer support bots, internal knowledge assistants, agents that run a workflow. Agent and automation work was the largest group in the AI categories, and it is where Python and API skills start to matter. Agent, chatbot and automation work had a median fixed-price budget of $120 and $20 to $40 an hour.

Step 4: Machine learning

Model training, fine-tuning and computer vision. The highest budgets (a median of $500 fixed) and the highest bar.

What to watch out for

"Train AI from home" offers outside a platform that charge a sign-up fee or ask for payment details are a scam pattern. Real annotation work never charges you to start.
Vague AI projects. "Build me an AI like ChatGPT for $100" is not a real scope. Prefer clients who describe the workflow they want automated.
Unpaid tests. A short paid test is normal for annotation. Hours of free labeling is not.
