Did AI Kill Upwork Writing Jobs? The 2026 Data

No, but it changed which writing jobs are left. In September 2026, writing was 3.4% of the Upwork job posts we tracked, exactly the share it had in May. About 130 writing jobs were posted a day. Inside that steady share, the mix moved: proofreading and resume work fell, copywriting, research and SEO rose, the median fixed budget went from $80 to $100, and the share of writing jobs asking for an Expert went from 25.7% to 31.5%.

One limit up front. Our data starts in May 2026, so it cannot show how much writing work disappeared between 2022 and now. It shows what the market looks like today and which way it is moving.

"Writing" here means four Upwork categories: Content Writing, Editing & Proofreading, Professional & Business Writing, and Sales & Marketing Copywriting. We compare shares, not raw counts, because the way jobs are collected changed during the summer.

Writing's share of Upwork is holding

Month (2026) Writing jobs tracked Share of all postings
May 4,396 3.39%
June 4,069 3.19%
September 3,945 3.39%
October 1 to 8 916 3.35%

For comparison, about 6.5% of all job titles on Upwork in September named AI or an AI tool. Writing is a small part of the platform, and it is not shrinking month to month.

The jobs moved upmarket

Writing jobs May 2026 September 2026
Median fixed-price budget $80 $100
Jobs asking for an Expert 25.7% 31.5%
Jobs asking for Entry level 12.5% 11.1%
Client payment verified 83.6% 84.8%
Median top hourly rate posted $38 $38

Fewer cheap jobs, more jobs asking for experience. That fits what many writers describe: the simple work a client can now do with a chatbot is the work that left.

What grew and what shrank

Mentions in job titles, per 1,000 writing jobs:

Title mentions May September Direction
Copywriting 69 85 Up
Research 39 50 Up
AI 21 30 Up
SEO 14 21 Up
LinkedIn 13 18 Up
Script 135 139 Flat
Article 43 43 Flat
Blog 39 40 Flat
Ghostwriting 28 30 Flat
Proofreading 90 68 Down
Book 86 68 Down
Resume 15 10 Down

These are small samples (a few dozen to a few hundred jobs each), so read them as direction, not precise measures.

The pattern is still clear. The work that fell is correction and formatting: proofreading, resumes. The work that rose needs judgment about a market or a reader: copywriting, research, SEO, LinkedIn. Scripts, mostly for video, are the largest single kind of writing job and held steady.

What writing pays by category

September 2026, median fixed-price budget:

Category Median fixed budget
Sales & Marketing Copywriting $375
Professional & Business Writing $125
Content Writing $100
Editing & Proofreading $50

Copywriting has the fewest jobs and by far the highest budgets. Editing and proofreading has the lowest.

What this means if you write for a living

  1. Move toward the work that grew. Copywriting, research-heavy pieces, SEO content and scripts. See best Upwork niches for writers.
  2. Sell the result, not the words. Clients who still hire writers are paying for sales, rankings or a voice. Say which one you deliver.
  3. Read how the client feels about AI. Some want an editor for AI drafts. Others want no AI at all. The post usually says.
  4. Apply early. With about 130 writing jobs a day spread across four categories, each good one draws a crowd. See why being first matters.
