Upwork for Non-Native English Speakers: What the Data Says
You do not need native English to win work on Upwork. Between 1% and 2% of the jobs we tracked in 2026 stated a preference for native English. More than 90% stated no English level at all. And more job titles asked for a second language, about 4,000 in September, than jobs asked for native English, about 1,400. For most freelancers outside the English-speaking countries, a second language is something to sell.
The numbers come from jobs we tracked in May and September 2026. A client can set a preferred English level when posting. We count the jobs where that setting was visible, so read the shares as close estimates and not exact figures.
How many jobs ask for which English level
| Preferred English level | May 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Native or bilingual | 1.9% | 1.2% |
| Fluent | 6.0% | 3.9% |
| Conversational | 2.4% | 1.5% |
| None stated | 89.8% | 93.3% |
For nine jobs in ten, the client set no level. They will judge your English the way they judge everything else: from your proposal and your profile.
Where native English is asked for, and where it is not
Share of each category's September jobs that stated a native English preference:
| Most often | Native preferred | Least often | Native preferred |
|---|---|---|---|
| Editing & Proofreading | 4.5% | 3D Modeling & CAD | 0.3% |
| Recruiting & HR | 3.9% | Data Entry & Transcription | 0.3% |
| Marketing, PR & Brand Strategy | 2.9% | Mobile Development | 0.3% |
| Content Writing | 2.6% | Ecommerce Development | 0.5% |
| Lead Generation & Telemarketing | 2.4% | Graphic Design | 0.6% |
| Project Management | 2.3% | Art & Illustration | 0.7% |
Even in editing, the category that asks most, 95 jobs in 100 did not state it. The pattern is what you would expect: work where the English is the product asks for native English most. Work where the result is code, a design or a drawing almost never does.
One more thing in the data: jobs that state any English level pay more. The median fixed budget was $300 on jobs preferring native English and $250 on jobs preferring fluent or conversational English, against $100 for all jobs. That is mostly because clients with larger projects fill in more of the form. It also means the fluent-level jobs are worth reading closely.
Your other language is worth money
Job titles naming a language, September 2026:
| Language | Jobs | Language | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish | 993 | Portuguese | 166 |
| German | 809 | Thai | 156 |
| French | 517 | Korean | 151 |
| Arabic | 375 | Russian | 101 |
| Japanese | 334 | Vietnamese | 89 |
| Polish | 281 | Hindi | 78 |
| Italian | 210 | Indonesian | 54 |
| Chinese | 206 | Turkish | 51 |
| Dutch | 188 | Bengali | 35 |
These are not only translation jobs. They include customer support, sales calls, voice recording, tutoring, content moderation and research in that language. In each of them you are the native speaker, and the freelancers from English-speaking countries are the ones who cannot apply.
Many of the voice and recording jobs are for AI training data and are open to beginners. See the Upwork niche map for how those niches pay.
How to write a proposal in your second language
What loses a proposal is being long, vague or hard to follow, not imperfect English. Clear and short beats elegant.
- Use short sentences. One idea in each. This is good writing in any language, and it removes most grammar risk.
- Lead with a fact about their job. "Your store has 400 products and the import fails on variants" proves you read the post. It needs no special vocabulary.
- Use numbers and names. "I built 12 Shopify stores, 3 in fashion" is stronger than any adjective, and it is easy to write correctly.
- Skip the formal opening. "Dear Sir, I hope this message finds you well" marks a proposal as a template. Start with the job.
- Check it, do not rewrite it. A spelling and grammar check is fine. Running your proposal through a tool until it sounds like marketing copy removes the specifics that win. Your own plain words, corrected, are better.
- Answer every screening question. See the most common Upwork screening questions.

Your profile and your English level
- State your real level. "Fluent" is accepted on the large majority of jobs. Claiming "Native" and then writing a proposal that shows otherwise loses the client's trust in everything else you said.
- List every language you speak, with levels. Clients filter and search on them.
- Put the second language in your title if you want that work. "Customer Support Specialist, German and English" is found by clients looking for exactly that.
- Let the portfolio speak. Screenshots, links and results need no translation.
The free Upwork profile audit grades your title, overview and skills against current job demand in about 10 seconds.
If the client wants a call
Say yes, and prepare. Write down the three points you want to make and the two questions you want to ask. Speak slowly. If you miss something, ask the client to repeat it: that reads as care, not weakness. After the call, send a short written summary of what you agreed. Clients remember the summary more than the accent.

Do I need native English to work on Upwork?
No. Between 1% and 2% of the jobs we tracked in 2026 stated a preference for native English. About 4% to 6% asked for fluent English, and more than 90% stated no English level at all.
What English level should I put on my Upwork profile?
The true one. Clients find out on the first message or call. "Fluent" with clear, correct writing wins more than "Native" that the first paragraph contradicts.
Which Upwork jobs need the least English?
Technical and visual work. In September 2026, about 0.3% of jobs in 3D modeling and CAD, data entry and mobile development asked for native English, and under 1% in design, illustration and engineering.
Can I get Upwork jobs in my own language?
Yes. In September 2026 about 4,000 job titles named a language other than English. Spanish (993), German (809), French (517), Arabic (375) and Japanese (334) led, and there were jobs naming Hindi, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Turkish, Bengali, Urdu and Tagalog too.
