Upwork Removed Specialized Profiles: What to Do With Your Profile Now (2026)
Upwork removed specialized profiles on May 28, 2026. Every freelancer now has one profile, with one title, one overview and up to 20 skills. If you relied on specialized profiles, the titles, overviews and skill lists you wrote for them are gone, and your main profile has to do their work.
What changed
| Before May 28, 2026 | Now |
|---|---|
| One general profile plus up to two specialized profiles | One profile |
| A separate title and overview for each | One title, one overview |
| 15 skills per profile | 20 skills |
| You chose which profile to send with a proposal | The same profile goes with every proposal |
Upwork says the single profile now adapts to each client, showing your most relevant work and skills first for the job in front of them. In practice that means the order of your portfolio and work history may change from client to client. Your title and overview do not change. They are the same for everyone.
What carried over and what did not
Kept: portfolio items, work history, reviews, earnings, Job Success Score and badges. These were always tied to your account.
Lost: the title, overview and skill list of each specialized profile. If your best niche copy lived there and your general profile was an afterthought, your profile is now weaker than it was in spring, and you may not have looked at it since.
Why this matters for landing work
A specialized profile let a WordPress developer who also did SEO show a pure SEO profile to SEO clients. That client now sees whatever your one title says. If it says "WordPress Developer and SEO Expert", both kinds of client see a generalist.
This is the main risk of the change: profiles that were sharp in two niches became vague in both.
How to rebuild your profile in six steps
1. Choose the niche that leads
Look at where your earnings and best reviews came from over the last twelve months. That niche gets the title and the opening lines. If two are equal, choose the one with more jobs you would like to win. See generalist vs specialist on Upwork.
2. Rewrite your title for that niche
One service, then the client type or result, in up to 70 characters. Do not join two services with "and". There are 40 patterns in Upwork profile title examples.
3. Rebuild the first two lines of the overview
About the first 250 characters show before "more". Use them for the lead niche only. Mention a second service lower down, under a clear subheading such as "I also help with". See Upwork profile overview examples.
4. Use the five extra skill slots
Upwork raised the limit from 15 to 20 so the skills from your old specialized profiles have somewhere to go. Fill all 20, main niche first. If you carry a second niche, keep it to four or five closely related skills, not a second full set. The method is in which skills to add to your Upwork profile.
5. Arrange your portfolio
Since Upwork may reorder items per client, make sure each piece clearly belongs to a niche: a title that names the service and the result, and the right skills attached. A piece with no clear niche helps no one. See Upwork portfolio tips.
6. Let your proposals carry the second niche
Your profile can lead with only one niche, but each proposal can speak to the job. When you apply outside your lead niche, use the first two lines of the cover letter to show the matching work, because the client will not find it in your title. See how to write an Upwork proposal that gets a response.
If you never used specialized profiles
Two things still apply to you. You have five new skill slots, and most freelancers have not filled them. And the freelancers you compete with have just been pushed into one profile, so a focused profile stands out more than it did before the change.
Check your profile after the change
Most profiles have not been reviewed since May. The free Vibeworker profile audit reads your public Upwork profile and shows what the change left behind.
- How many of the 20 skill slots you use, and which skills do not fit your niche.
- Skills to add, from jobs posted in your niche this week, with the number of jobs asking for each.
- A title score and a stronger title, written for one clear niche.
- Your overview marked up line by line, with a new opening paragraph ready to paste.
- Dead portfolio links found for you.
- No login and nothing installed. It reads the public page clients see.

Did Upwork remove specialized profiles?
Yes. Specialized profiles stopped being available on May 28, 2026. Every freelancer now has one profile.
What happened to my specialized profile content?
Portfolio items, earnings and work history stayed on your main profile. The separate title, overview and skill list of each specialized profile did not carry over, so anything you want to keep has to be written into your main profile.
How many skills can I have now?
20, up from 15. The extra slots are there so you can bring in the skills that used to sit on your specialized profiles.
Can I still work in two niches on Upwork?
Yes, but one of them has to lead. Your title and the first lines of your overview should name the main niche. The second can appear in your skills, portfolio and later paragraphs, and in the proposals you send.
How do I check my profile after the change?
Run the free Upwork profile audit. It scores your single profile, counts how many of the 20 skill slots you use and lists the skills clients in your niche asked for this week.
