Upwork Connects Explained: Price, Free Connects and How Many You Need (2026)
Connects are the tokens Upwork charges to send a proposal. Each Connect costs $0.15, and a typical job asks for around 12 Connects, so the average proposal costs about $1.80. Freelancer Plus includes 100 Connects a month; on the free Basic plan, some freelancers receive 10 free a month.
What Upwork Connects are
Connects are Upwork's virtual tokens. You spend them to:
- Submit a proposal. Every job shows its Connects price before you apply.
- Boost a proposal to the top of the client's list, by bidding extra Connects against other freelancers.
- Show the Availability Badge, which costs a weekly amount you cap yourself.
You don't need Connects when a client invites you to a job or sends you an offer directly.
How much Connects cost
Each Connect costs $0.15. Upwork sells them in bundles of 10 or a custom amount:
| Connects | Price |
|---|---|
| 10 | $1.50 |
| 50 | $7.50 |
| 100 | $15 |
| 200 | $30 |
To buy, go to Connects → Buy Connects. You need a verified billing method on your account, even if you pay from your earnings balance. Upwork uses your earnings first, but it can't split one purchase between your balance and your card.
Unused Connects roll over each month with no limit, and expire one year after they were issued. The oldest are used first.
How many Connects a job needs
Upwork sets the price per job based on project size, scope and market demand, and it can change while the job is posted. We track new Upwork jobs as they post. Across 26,445 jobs from the last 30 days (September 2026), our model estimates:
- Average: 12 Connects per proposal (median 11)
- 8 or fewer: 27% of jobs
- 9 to 16: 52% of jobs
- 17 or more: 21% of jobs
It varies by category. Among the largest categories:
| Category | Average Connects | Jobs needing 20+ |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiting & Human Resources | 15.4 | 36% |
| Accounting & Bookkeeping | 14.4 | 29% |
| Web Development | 14.0 | 23% |
| Corporate & Contract Law | 13.9 | 22% |
| Content Writing | 13.5 | 18% |
| Ecommerce Development | 13.4 | 19% |
| Web & Mobile Design | 13.0 | 17% |
| Marketing, PR & Brand Strategy | 12.7 | 0% |
These are estimates from our own model, which matches Upwork's real price exactly on about 89% of jobs we can check. Work out your monthly cost with the Upwork Connects calculator.
How to get free Connects
These all come from Upwork's own help pages:
- Monthly free Connects. Some Basic freelancers receive 10 a month; Upwork runs this as an offer, so check your Connects history to see if you're eligible. Freelancer Plus includes 100 a month.
- New freelancer bonus. A one-time bonus of up to 50 Connects after your first Connects purchase or Freelancer Plus subscription, if offered at signup. Some onboarding tasks (profile setup, identity verification) also earn Connects.
- Talent badges. 30 Connects each for Rising Talent, Top Rated and Top Rated Plus, up to 90 in total. Skip a badge and you get the missed Connects with the next one.
- Sending proposals. Upwork is testing a reward of 12 Connects when you submit three or more proposals and spend at least 54 Connects on them, up to twice a month. Not everyone gets it yet.
- Your first boost. 10 Connects the first time you successfully boost a proposal.
- Interviews. You may receive Connects when an established client interviews you. Part shows as a refund of what you spent, the rest as a reward.
- Promotions. Upwork occasionally issues promo codes for free Connects.
What about promo codes?
Upwork does run promotions with real promo codes. You enter them under Connects → Buy Connects, after choosing an amount. The long lists of "Upwork promo codes" on other websites are mostly expired or made up, so don't count on them.
When Connects are refunded
You get your Connects back (as Connects, not cash) when:
- The client cancels the job before hiring anyone (expired posts don't count)
- Upwork removes the job for breaking its Terms of Service
You don't get them back when the client rejects your proposal, hires someone else, or lets the job expire, or when you withdraw your proposal.
How to spend fewer Connects per contract won
Since most Connects are spent on proposals that don't win, the best way to save Connects is to send fewer, better-timed proposals.
- Apply early. Clients read the first proposals more carefully. See why being first on Upwork matters.
- Skip jobs with weak signals. A high Connects price on an unclear job from an unverified client is a bad bet. See when to spend Connects and what the Connects price tells you.
- Don't save Connects by applying late. It looks cheaper and costs more. See why saving Connects is costing you money.

- One-click proposals: a cover letter and screening answers drafted from your profile and the job.

How much does one Upwork Connect cost?
$0.15. Upwork sells Connects in bundles of 10 or a custom amount, so 10 Connects cost $1.50, 50 cost $7.50 and 100 cost $15. You need a verified billing method to buy them, even if you pay from your earnings.
How many Connects does a proposal cost?
It depends on the job, and the number can change while the job is posted. Across about 26,000 jobs we tracked in the last 30 days, our model estimates an average of 12 Connects per proposal and a median of 11. About a quarter of jobs need 8 or fewer, and about a fifth need 17 or more.
How do I get free Connects on Upwork?
Some freelancers on the Basic plan receive 10 free Connects a month, and Freelancer Plus includes 100. Upwork also gives Connects for talent badges (30 each for Rising Talent, Top Rated and Top Rated Plus), a one-time bonus of up to 50 for new freelancers, some activity rewards, interviews with established clients, and official promotions.
Do Upwork Connects expire?
Yes, one year after they are issued. Unused Connects roll over each month with no limit, and the oldest are used first.
Is there an Upwork promo code for Connects?
Upwork sometimes runs promotions with a real promo code, which you enter under Connects, Buy Connects. Lists of codes on other websites are mostly expired or made up.
