Upwork Fees for Freelancers Explained (2026)

Upwork charges freelancers a service fee of 0% to 15% on each contract, set by Upwork and shown before you apply or accept an offer. On top of that you pay Connects to send proposals (about $1.80 for an average job), and optionally $19.99 a month for Freelancer Plus. Direct contracts with clients you bring yourself cost 5% on Basic and 0% on Plus.

The freelancer service fee

• Range: 0% to 15% per contract.
• Who sets it: Upwork, per contract, based on the type of contract and supply and demand.
• When you see it: before you submit a proposal or accept an offer.
• Locked in: once a proposal, offer or contract is sent, the rate does not change for that contract.
• Refunded with the money: if your client gets a refund, Upwork returns the fee you paid on that amount.
• Exceptions: Direct Contracts pay 5% on Basic and 0% on Plus, Any Hire contracts and Upwork Payroll pay no freelancer fee, and Enterprise clients usually mean a 10% fee.

Because the fee varies, check it on each job before you apply, especially when you price tightly.

Connects: the cost of applying

Every proposal costs Connects, at $0.15 each. Across about 26,000 jobs we tracked in the last 30 days, our model estimates an average of 12 Connects per proposal, so about $1.80 per application. How to price with fees in mind

Decide what you want to receive, then work back. If you want $450 and the job shows a 10% fee, quote $500. Upwork's own example: to take home $20 an hour at a 10% fee, charge $22.22.
