Work from home engineering jobs on Upwork are steady and better paid than average. In the 30 days to 5 October 2026 we tracked 1,059 engineering, CAD and architecture jobs, about 35 a day. The median fixed-price job paid $150 and hourly jobs had a median range of $15 to $35 an hour. AutoCAD is the most requested tool by far, followed by SolidWorks, Revit and SketchUp. Clients want proven skills: only 4% of these jobs were marked entry level.

• The US posts 55%, far more than any other country, then Australia, India, the UK and Canada.
• 75% have verified payment, close to the Upwork average.
• 25% are first-time clients. These are often homeowners or inventors with a sketch and no drawings. Ask for dimensions and reference files before quoting.

Things to check before applying

• Licensing and stamps. Some structural, civil and electrical jobs need drawings stamped by a licensed engineer in a specific state or country. If you are not licensed there, only apply to the drafting part, and say so.
• Local codes. Permit drawings must follow local building codes. Say which codes you have worked with.
• File formats. Confirm the deliverable: DWG, RVT, STEP, PDF set, or native SolidWorks files.

The best-paid freelancers in this category pick one lane: residential permit drawings, SolidWorks parts for manufacturing, Revit BIM, or PCB layout. A focused title and portfolio beat a list of every tool.

4. Quote with a clear scope

Engineering jobs grow easily. List what is included (number of sheets, revisions, file formats) and price extra rounds separately. For large jobs, propose a first milestone such as a base model or one sheet.

5. Apply early to clear jobs
