Freelance Video Editing Jobs on Upwork: Volume, Pay and How to Win (2026)

Freelance video editing is one of the busiest categories on Upwork: in the 30 days to 5 October 2026 we tracked 1,793 video editing jobs, about 60 a day. The median fixed-price job paid $80 and hourly jobs had a median range of $10 to $27 an hour. YouTube and short-form work (Reels, Shorts, TikTok) make up about half the volume between them, and Premiere Pro is the most requested tool.

With that much volume, finding jobs is easy. Landing them means standing out among many editors, quickly.

What video editing jobs look like

Type of work Jobs (30 days) Typical request
YouTube 475 Weekly long-form edits with cuts, captions, b-roll, thumbnails sometimes included
Short-form (Reels, Shorts, TikTok, UGC) 466 Fast-paced vertical clips, captions, hooks, often repurposed from long videos
Long-form and documentary 92 Story-driven edits, interviews, color and sound
Podcast 52 Multi-camera video podcasts, clips for social media
Weddings and events 42 Highlight films and full-length edits
Other 666 Ads, explainers, course videos, real estate, corporate

Counts come from job titles, and a title can match more than one type, so rows overlap slightly.

Skills named most often: video editing, video post-editing, Adobe Premiere Pro (694 jobs), video production, Adobe After Effects (367), Final Cut Pro (255), motion graphics, audio editing, explainer video and Instagram Reels.

Budgets are a little under the Upwork average because many jobs are single short videos. The money in this category comes from repeat work: a YouTube channel that posts weekly, or a brand that needs 20 short clips a month.

Who posts video editing jobs

  • The US leads with 42% of jobs, then India, the UK, Canada and Australia.
  • 72% have verified payment, slightly below the 77% average. Check client history before sending a test edit.
  • Only 7% are entry level. Clients expect a reel. Beginners do better starting with short-form clips, where a strong sample matters more than years of experience.
  • 24% ask for expert level, mostly long-form, documentary and ad work.

How to win freelance video editing jobs

1. Show the right reel

One general showreel is not enough. Keep three short samples: a YouTube edit, a vertical short and one in your specialty (podcast, ads, weddings). Link the one that matches the job in your first two lines.

2. Pick a lane

The niches with steady repeat work right now are YouTube channels, short-form repurposing and podcast clips. See the best Upwork niches for video editors for how to choose.

3. Answer the brief, not the category

Clients often list a reference video. Say what you noticed about it ("fast cuts every 2 to 3 seconds, bold word-by-word captions, zoom punch-ins") and how you would match it. It proves you watched it.

4. Price the package

"$60 per 10-minute YouTube edit with captions and two revisions, 48-hour turnaround" is easier to say yes to than an hourly estimate. For short-form, quote per clip or per batch.

5. Be careful with test edits

A short paid test is normal. A free test of a full video is not. Offer a 15 to 30 second sample from their footage instead.

6. Apply early

With 60 jobs a day and many editors, the first few proposals get the most attention. Our estimate for the median video editing job is 9 Connects (about $1.35). See how fast Upwork jobs fill up.
