What fashion design jobs look like
Jobs mentioning each type in the title or skill list:
| Type of work | Jobs (30 days) | Typical request |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing and apparel design | 133 | Design a collection or a single piece for a new brand |
| Tech packs | 40 | Factory-ready specs: flats, measurements, materials, construction |
| T-shirts and merch | 24 | Graphic tees, streetwear prints, merch for creators |
| Sourcing and manufacturing | 15 | Find a factory, manage samples, cost a product |
| Pattern making | 14 | Digital patterns and grading |
| 3D fashion (CLO 3D) | 9 | 3D garment samples for fit and marketing |
A job can mention more than one type. Some "clothing" jobs are for online clothing stores rather than design.
Skills clients listed most often: graphic design, fashion design, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, clothing, illustration, logo design, tech pack and technical design. Graphic design leads the list, so a fashion designer who can also do prints and logos has an edge.

How to win fashion design jobs on Upwork
1. Show a complete tech pack
The single most useful portfolio piece is a full tech pack for one garment: flats, a measurement and grading chart, a bill of materials and construction callouts. It proves you can take an idea to a factory. Remove any client brand details.
2. Speak to first-time founders
Many clients have never made a garment. Explain the steps briefly in your proposal: design, tech pack, sampling with a factory, fit corrections, production. A designer who can guide the process wins over one who only draws.
3. Specialize by product
Streetwear, swimwear, activewear, kidswear and bridal each have their own construction details. "Activewear designer: tech packs for leggings and sports bras" is easier to hire than "fashion designer".
4. Package the price
"One garment: two concept sketches, one revision, final flats and full tech pack, $X, delivered in 7 days." Clear packages work well for first-time clients.
5. Apply early
Our estimate for the median fashion job is 10 Connects (about $1.50). See how fast Upwork jobs fill up.
