Feedback to Client on Upwork: 15 Samples You Can Copy (2026)

To leave feedback for a client on Upwork, open the contract from All contracts, go to Contract details and select "Give feedback". You have 14 days from the end of the contract. Feedback is double-blind: the client sees yours only after they leave theirs or the window closes. Good feedback is short and specific: what the project was, what the client did well, and whether you would work with them again.

Below are 15 samples to copy and adapt, then the rules that are worth knowing.

Positive feedback samples

Use these when the client was clear, responsive and paid on time.

  1. Great client. The brief for the product descriptions was clear from the start, feedback came within a day, and payment was on time. I would gladly work with them again.

  2. Clear requirements, quick answers and fair revisions. The Shopify migration went smoothly because every question was answered the same day. Highly recommended.

  3. A pleasure to work with. They shared all the files and logins on day one, gave clear feedback on each draft and approved milestones promptly.

  4. Excellent communication throughout the video edit. They knew what they wanted, gave timestamped notes and respected the agreed number of revisions. Looking forward to the next project.

  5. Very organized client. The data entry template, sample rows and deadline were all clear, which made it easy to deliver accurately. Paid immediately on completion.

  6. Long-term contract that felt like a real team. Weekly check-ins, clear priorities and fair expectations. I recommend them to any freelancer.

Short positive samples

For small jobs, one or two lines is enough.

  1. Clear brief, fast payment, great to work with.

  2. Quick, friendly and organized. Would work with them again.

  3. Easy project thanks to clear instructions. Thank you!

Neutral feedback samples

Use these when the project was fine but not smooth, and you want to be fair without praising things that did not happen.

  1. The project was completed as agreed. The scope grew during the work, which we handled with an extra milestone. Payment was on time.

  2. Friendly client. Response times were sometimes slow, which moved the deadline, but the final result was approved and paid.

  3. The requirements changed a few times during the logo project. We reached a final version both of us were happy with.

Honest-but-fair feedback samples

Use these when there was a real problem. Keep to facts. Never insult, never share private details, and never name the client.

  1. The original brief covered five pages. During the project it grew to twelve without a change in budget. Freelancers should agree the full scope in writing before starting.

  2. Communication was difficult: messages often went unanswered for several days, and the project ran three weeks past the agreed date as a result.

  3. Payment for the final milestone took several weeks and several reminders. The work itself was approved without changes.

Private note samples

The private note is visible only to the client and does not affect their public reputation. Use it for things that are useful to them but not to the public.

Thank you for a great project. If you need the remaining product pages done next month, I have time in the first two weeks.

One suggestion for future projects: sharing the brand guide at the start would save a round of revisions. Thanks again for being so responsive.

How Upwork feedback works

  • Where: All contracts, then the contract, then Contract details, then "Give feedback".
  • When: within 14 days of the contract ending, midnight UTC on the last day.
  • Double-blind: neither side sees the other's feedback until both have submitted it or the 14 days are up. You cannot write your review as a reaction to theirs.
  • Private note: optional, visible only to the client, not on their profile.
  • Guidelines: Upwork asks that feedback is about the work and the experience on the contract, free of abusive or discriminatory language, free of explicit content, and does not share the client's private or confidential information, including their name.

Why your feedback matters to other freelancers

Client ratings on Upwork are very high on average. Among jobs we tracked from clients with a rating (6 September to 5 October 2026), the median client rating was 4.99 out of 5, and 80% of clients were rated 4.8 or higher. Only 4% were below 4.0.

So a star rating alone tells a freelancer very little. The written reviews are where the real information is: slow payment, scope creep, or a client who is a pleasure to work with. When you write specific feedback, you help the next freelancer decide whether to spend Connects on that client. See how to read Upwork client history.

Writing tips

  • Be specific. "Clear brief and timestamped notes" helps more than "great client".
  • Describe actions, not character. "Messages went unanswered for days" is fair. "Unprofessional" is not useful.
  • Match the tone to the project. A $20 task needs one line. A six-month contract deserves a paragraph.
  • Leave it soon. Within a day or two of closing, while the details are fresh, and well inside the 14 days.
  • Ask for theirs. When you close a contract, a short message asking the client to leave feedback helps. Reviews are how you get to better jobs. See the fastest way to build reviews on Upwork.

  • Scores for scope clarity and red flags, so vague or risky posts are easy to skip.
  • Real-time alerts on your own filters, on Telegram, mobile and web push, RSS or webhook.
  • Estimated Connects before you apply.
  • One-click AI proposal drafts you edit and send yourself.

How long do I have to leave feedback for a client on Upwork?

14 days from the date the contract ends. The countdown runs on UTC time, so the deadline is midnight UTC on the 14th day.

Can the client see my feedback before leaving theirs?

No. Upwork feedback is double-blind. The client sees what you wrote only after both of you have left feedback, or after the 14-day window closes.

What is a private note to a client?

An optional message you can leave when ending a contract. Only the client sees it, in their contract workroom. It does not appear on their public profile and does not affect their reputation.

Should I leave honest feedback if the client was difficult?

Yes, but keep it factual and calm. Describe what happened, not the person. Other freelancers read client reviews before applying, and a measured review is more useful to them and looks more professional to future clients reading yours.

Where do I leave feedback for a client?

Go to All contracts, find the contract, open the Contract details tab and select "Give feedback". You can also leave it from the end-contract flow.
